Warehouse Club

A Warehouse Club is one of the types of retailing outlet which sell a wide selection of merchandise in fixed quantities. In this type of retailing the customers pay an annual membership fees to be able to shop. A warehouse club sells a variety of products at relatively low prices and these clubs can maintain the low prices because of the no-frills format of the stores. Furthermore the customers at Warehouse Clubs have to purchase fixed and large wholesale quantities of products. As a result these retail outlets often attract both bargain hunters and small business owners and retailers.
The concept of warehouse club has certain similarities to consumers' cooperative supermarkets in Europe. The difference is that Warehouse Club stores are bigger and are not co-operatively owned.

The first Warehouse Club was founded in the United States when Sol Price and his son Robert Price set up Price Club in San Diego in the 1976. The largest warehouse club chains in the United States include Costco and Sam's Club with the latter having a membership base of 46 million customers and 500 stores throughout the United States of America. On the other hand Costco warehouse club has stores located in seven other countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. The other smaller competitors include BJ's Wholesale Club and Makro. According to the 2006 U.S. Industry & Market Outlook there are around 3,400 warehouse clubs in the United States which account for $191 billion.
The products sold at Warehouse Club usually include a variety of food items, a wide range of household items, automotive goods, clothing, and services. There are many states in the US states which entail warehouse clubs to sell alcohol to non-members at prices enjoyed by members. These US states include Arizona, California, Connecticut, Minnesota, Ohio, Texas, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Missouri, and Vermont. There were some warehouse clubs in the United States which are not in function any longer while some have merged with bigger warehouse clubs.
